How to hire an emergency plumber around Puget Sound

Water on the floor makes everyone hurry. Shut the main valve first. Then spend two minutes on the checks below while you wait for a call back.

Two credentials, both from L&I

Washington licenses plumbing twice. The person holding the wrench needs an L&I plumbing certificate, a journey level, specialty, residential service, trainee or temporary card, and must carry it with photo ID. Trainees work under supervision. The company needs a plumbing contractor license, required since January 1, 2021 for any business that employs plumbers. (RCW 18.106.020) Both show up on L&I Verify.

What to ask on the first call

  1. What is your plumbing contractor license number?
  2. Who is coming, and what certificate do they hold?
  3. Is there a charge to come out or for after hours, and does it count toward the repair?
  4. Do you charge by the hour or a flat rate for this kind of job?
  5. If the job needs a permit, will you pull it?

Red flags at the door

  • The plumber cannot show a certificate card when you ask.
  • They want you to take out the permit in your name. L&I lists that as a warning sign. (L&I)
  • Cash only, or full payment before the work is done.
  • A sub shows up who works for a different company. State law bars licensed contractors from subcontracting plumbing to anyone unlicensed. (RCW 18.106.020(5))

Pinning down the price

We found no local survey of emergency plumbing prices, so we don't print one. Ask whether there is a charge to come out, whether nights cost more, and whether they charge by the hour or flat, before the plumber drives over, and get them by text. More: how to compare after-hours plumber quotes.

Bond, insurance and your protection

Plumbing contractors are licensed by L&I under RCW 18.106 with a $6,000 bond, and must carry liability insurance. (RCW 18.106.410, read Oct 18, 2026) Check the license on L&I Verify before work starts.

A WA plumbing contractor license badge on a listing here means we matched that business by phone and name to an active record in L&I contractor license data on October 17, 2026. Records change. Run the lookup yourself before work starts.
